Float Therapy FAQ - Aqua Spa Float Center

Float

  • How do I prepare—and what do I bring?

There are a few ways you can prepare for the best float possible.

    • Avoid shaving, tanning, waxing—or anything else that would increase the sensitivity of your skin.
    • We provide A&D ointment in each float room to protect any small cuts and grazes from stinging!
    • If you wear contacts, we recommend you bring a case to store them.
    • Hair color needs to be “set” before coming in to float (about two weeks.) Please reschedule if it is not.
    • We encourage clients to avoid caffeine for at least 4 hours before floating for the most relaxing experience.
    • If you have extensions or had a keratin treatment we may not recommend floating.
    • Eat a light meal before your session. If you come on an empty stomach, you may be distracted by stomach grumbles.
    • There’s a lot of salt in our float tanks. Thus, it is best to avoid wearing your “best clothes”. We recommend comfortable garments that are easy to change in and out of.
    • We provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, q-tips, makeup remover and complimentary towels, comfortable slides, and a robe.
    • We encourage clients to float nude for the greatest experience—each room does have its own private shower and changing area for complete privacy with a locking door. Plus, certain fabric dyes and softeners can interfere with our pristine water.
  • What are the benefits of float therapy?

Benefits include stress relief, injury recovery, chronic pain relief, enhanced athletic performance, anxiety relief, improved sleep quality, improved blood flow for muscle pain relief, inflammation relief and so much more! Visit our float therapy page for more information.

  • What are the differences between the tanks?

Our Deluxe Quest Float Suites (Ananda, Boketto, Metanoia, and Noor) are very spacious with high ceilings that allow you to enter fully upright. It is as if you are stepping into a “room”. These suites are perfect for those who like a more open environment or want to do a couple’s float!

The Revolution Float Orb (Ukiyo) is a “womb-like” experience for seasoned floaters or for those prefer an enclosed experience. The RFO is the largest pod in the industry—perfect for athletes and taller floaters. And, with the orb, you can leave the domed top completely open if you prefer. Keep in mind that you may feel a temperature difference against your skin.

Both styles have a low entry threshold.

  • Can I float if I’m menstruating?

Yes! Treat it like going to a swimming pool and use a tampon or menstrual cup. If you don’t have the proper supplies, we ask that you reschedule your float for another day.

  • What if I’m claustrophobic?

Not to worry! Our spacious Deluxe Quest Float Suites are large, like a room with high ceilings. It’s perfect for those who prefer a lot of space and can even accommodate a couple’s float. And, you can float with the door open. Our Revolution Float Orb is meant for those who prefer a “womb-like” experience—however, the clamshell lid (which is domed) can be left open during your experience if you prefer.

  • Can I float while pregnant?

Yes! Floating while pregnant can remove the pressure off your lower back and provide the perfect environment to bond with your baby. Plus, the stress relief, pain relief and sleep improvement qualities are great for pregnant women. If you are in your first trimester, we recommend speaking to your doctor before you float.

  • I just got a tattoo, should I float?

It’s best to avoid floating with a fresh tattoo. We like to call floating the “world’s largest papercut finder.” So, not only can the salt burn if it’s not fully healed, but the water solution could cause fading or discoloration of your tattoo. How long you should wait before floating depends on the tattoo and how quickly it heals, but our research from tattoo artists and floaters have suggested waiting 4-6 weeks.

  • What if I fall asleep?

Due to the large amount of Epsom salt, it is extremely hard to turn over like you would on a bed. If you do fall asleep, soft music and a soothing voice will wake you up to let you know your session is over. In some cases, we may enter the room to wake you up.

  • How is the water cleaned?

While the high concentration of Epsom salt makes the water solution a hostile environment for most microorganisms, our Superior Float Tanks are equipped with the 1 Micron Filtration System for enhanced filtration. The Micron Filtration System’s custom X-100 filter is able to filter particles from the water to 1 micron in size (hair is 50-70 microns for reference!) and is both NSF 50 and FDA compliant for drinking water (Class 1 Filtration). Standard competitor pool and spa filter cartridges only filter to 20-30 microns and require regular cleaning. This filtration system cycles the water three times between each guest and also treats the water with hydrogen peroxide, Ozone, and UV light. After every float, the water and float rooms are visually inspected. Ask us if you’d like to see the Micron Filtration System in action!

  • How are the rooms cleaned?

Our rooms are cleaned and thoroughly inspected in between each float session. While our state-of-the-art filtration system by Superior Float Tanks ensures that our float tank water is always pristine. The water is filtered three times between each guest using a 1 micron filter, hydrogen peroxide, Ozone and UV lamps to remove all impurities.

Our associates will ensure all touch-points inside the float tank and out are cleaned with a high-concentration H202 (Hydrogen Peroxide) spray between every client (this includes tank buttons, walls, doors and handles, shower handles, benches and exterior door handles). After we carefully clean and sanitize the entire room, we replace float room items (towels and amenities) while wearing gloves and PPE. Our brand-new HVAC system ensures optimal air flow in each room during and in between each session.

  • What if I get salt in my eyes?

It might sting—however, we provide a small towel and a fresh bottle of water in your tank to spray then dab your eyes with.

  • How often should I float?

For first-timers, we recommend floating three times to really get into a comfortable place. The first time you float – there is a lot of information to absorb. You may just be getting used to the idea. Your mind may be overactive. The second time – you have all the facts and you are ready to try it again… the third time is usually the charm! You can enter the tank with less anxiety simply because you’ve gathered your info and you’ve done it before. It’s starting to feel like “home”. You might set an intention or simply commit to letting go and getting the most out of this magical session! Once you have three floats under your belt, you can better gauge how each has made you feel and how you felt in the time between. Learn more on our blog.

  • Can two people float in a tank?

Yes! Our Deluxe Quest Float Suites are the perfect size for this. Couple’s floats are a wonderful bonding experience for spouses, mothers and daughters or even best friends!

  • Is there a max weight/height?

Our spacious Deluxe Quest Float Suites are nearly 8 feet long, 6.5 feet wide, and 7 feet tall. Most people will be able to stand comfortably. There is no weight limit—the concentrated solution contains 1500 lbs. of Epsom salt which is dense enough to float virtually anyone!

The Revolution Float Orb is 8’6” by 4’7.5” making it long enough to float almost anyone comfortably. It also provides a low threshold for easy entry. Again, with approximately 1200 lbs. of Epsom salt saturated water, virtually anyone can remain buoyant.

  • Who should not float?

People with incontinence, uncontrolled epilepsy, open wounds or sores, an infectious disease, and people with drug or alcohol intoxication or kidney problems should not float. If you suffer from a serious medical condition, please consult your physician before attempting to float. Also, if you have dyed your hair within the last two weeks or currently have had a spray tan, you will have to reschedule your appointment.

  • What if I recently dyed my hair—can I still float?
One important step in preparing for your float is considering your hair dye schedule.

It’s best not to float for about two weeks after you dye your hair. The best test to see if you are ok to float is what we call the “towel test”. After your shower (with shampoo), if the color shows up on the towel, you should wait. OR if in the shower you still see color running out, same principle!

As for the color/texture, the salt can be drying over time (oddly enough, it softens the skin). It won’t take the color out, but it could potentially make the hair dry or dull. Most of our guests keep their dye schedule in mind when they book a float.
