Infrared Sauna

  • What is infrared heat?

Infrared heat is completely safe and healthy for all living things! It is a naturally occurring output of the sun, however it does not contain the harmful UV rays associated with unprotected sunlight. You can be exposed to infrared light for hours without the risk of burning. In fact, infrared heat is so safe, it is used in hospitals to warm newborn infants.

  • What’s the difference between infrared saunas and traditional saunas?

The short answer is that infrared saunas don’t get as hot. They reach a max temperature of 100°-150°F while traditional (hot rock or steam) saunas operate at over 200°F.

The infrared sauna experience is like lying in the sun on a warm day and feeling the heat radiate into the core of your body. Traditional saunas heat the air making it difficult to breathe, while infrared saunas warm the body directly. Because the infrared heat penetrates below the skin’s surface,  infrared saunas are seven times more effective than traditional saunas at detoxifying the body. By raising the body’s core temperature, infrared saunas can produce a sweat composed of 20% toxins vs. only 3% toxins with a traditional sauna.

  • What should I do to prepare for my session?

Towels are provided for you to sit on and use during your session. We recommend drinking an electrolyte replacement water or sports drink before and after sauna use, like the “Fit Aid” drinks we carry at Aqua Spa. We also recommend bringing loose or comfortable clothing to change into after your session.

  • How Do You Clean Infrared Saunas?

After every session, we thoroughly wipe the inside and disinfect all touchpoints. Please place a microfiber towel over your bench and backrest during sauna sessions help keep the sauna clean and sweat-free.

  • I’m Pregnant. Can I Use an Infrared Sauna?

Please consult your physician before using infrared saunas while pregnant.

  • How long is a typical session—and how often can I do it?

We provide 30 or 45 minute sessions. We recommend using the sauna 3 to 4 times a week, but it is safe to use every day.

  • I’m Taking Prescription Medications, Can I Use an Infrared Sauna?

Individuals who are using prescription drugs should seek the advice of their personal physician or a pharmacist for possible changes in the drugs effect when the body is exposed to infrared waves or elevated body temperature. Diuretics, barbiturates and beta-blockers may impair the body’s natural heat loss mechanisms. Anticholinergics such as amitryptaline may inhibit sweating and can predispose individuals to heat rash or to a lesser extent, heat stroke. Some over-the-counter drugs, such as antihistamines, may also cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke.

  • Can Kids Use Infrared Saunas?

The core body temperature of children rises much faster than adults. This occurs due to a higher metabolic rate per body mass, limited circulatory adaptation to increased cardiac demands and the inability to regulate body temperature by sweating. If you are allowing your child to use the sauna, you must sign a waiver form for the child. When using with a child, the sauna will operate at a lower temperature and for no more than 15 minutes at a time.

  • Can the elderly use Infrared Saunas?

The ability to maintain core body temperature decreases with age. This is primarily due to circulatory conditions and decreased sweat gland function. The body must be able to activate its natural cooling processes in order to maintain core body temperature. We recommend operating the sauna at a lower temperature and for no more than 15 minutes at a time.

  • Does infrared heat interfere with implants (metal, silicone, etc.)?

Metal pins, rods, artificial joints or any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared waves and are not heated by this system. Nevertheless, you should consult your physician prior to using an infrared sauna.

  • Should I be concerned with the output of electromagnetic field (EMF) from your saunas?

No, the EMF levels of our infrared saunas are well below the threshold of what is generally considered safe. In fact, our saunas produce less EMF than a standard hair dryer. If you are concerned at all about EMF, the EMF-cancelling technology found in our Sunlighten mPulse saunas reduces EMF to Sunlighten’s  lowest levels.

  • Am I able to shower after my sauna session?

At this time, our showers are reserved for float therapy guests. If you book a float and infrared sauna session and would like to shower afterward, we will recommend scheduling your sauna session first. Some industry experts recommend waiting until your body stops sweating to shower off.  We do provide cooling lavender cloths to cleanse yourself with after your sauna session. Unscented cooling cloths are available upon request.

  • How many people fit in each sauna?

Our two mPulse Believe Sunlighten saunas can comfortably fit two people. The mPulse Conquer model can fit up to three. At this time, we only allow members of the same household to use the saunas together.
